神賜福給他們， 神對他們說：「要生養眾多，遍滿這地，治理它；要管理海裏的魚、天空的鳥和地上各樣活動的生物。」

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
上帝不只創造了世界，祂也制定了人類如何透過家庭來照管祂所創造的計畫。因此，我們不只是照著上帝的形像被造的，也是為特定的目的所造的。教會常常把大使命──傳福音、帶領人歸向基督──視為我們唯一的任務，卻忽略了我們的文化使命/職責。文化使命並非指教會須發起「文化事工」，而是關乎我們應當如何生活，也就是如何活出上帝的文化創造——我們與誰結婚，我們生多少孩子，我們從事什麼樣的工作，我們如何度過閒暇時光等等。我們絕不能把屬靈生活（在教會的敬拜）與日常生活（教會之外的生活）割裂開來！上帝希望我們透過家庭來管理祂的創造，這是一種祝福。當基督徒放棄這個使命，或以不符合聖經的方式去管理它時，我們就無法實現上帝的旨意，也無法得到祂所賜的祝福。
「治理」和「管理」是軍事術語－先征服，後統治。這意味著我們需要以聖經的世界觀（結合科學）深入研究受造界，並且懂得如何管理受造界，以彰顯神的榮耀。邁爾斯(Ken Myers)道出文化的本質與重要性：文化是我們對世界的理解與在其中的創造(Culture is what we make of the world)。

Not only did God create the world, but He also established a plan for how Man was to care for His creation through families. Therefore, we are not only created in God’s image, but we are also created for a special purpose. The church often considers as our sole task the Great Commission —evangelism and leading people to Christ—forgetting our cultural mandate, our cultural commission. The cultural mandate is not about the church launching a “cultural ministry”, but it is rather simply about how we should live, that is, God’s cultural creation—whom we marry, how many children we will have, what kind of work we will do, how we will spend our leisure time, etc. We must not separate our spiritual life (worship in the church) from our daily life (life outside the church)! God wants us to manage His creation through our families, and this is a blessing. When Christians abandon this mandate or manage it in unbiblical ways, we fail to achieve God’s purpose and lose His intended blessing.
“To subdue” and to “have dominion” are military terms – first conquer, and then rule. This implies that we need to study creation intensely with a biblical worldview (using science) and know how to manage creation in order to reflect God’s glory. Author Ken Myers summarizes what culture is and why it matters: “Culture is what we make of the world.”
God’s first and best gift to humanity is culture, the realm in which human beings themselves will be the cultivators and creators, ultimately contributing to the cosmic purposes of the Cultivator and Creator of the natural world.

God’s people should long have taken up the cultural mandate and have become a “change agent” starting in our own homes, showing the world that the Gospel gives us not only a new life, but also a new vision of how to live—this is also a form of evangelism—a demonstration of the Gospel!

Dear God, thank you for giving us new life through Jesus Christ. Please help us to live new lives according to your plan, so that people may see the Gospel through our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
