17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
Genesis 26:17-18
When Isaac settled in Gerar, God blessed him abundantly. The Philistines, however, became envious of his prosperity and consequently asked him to leave the area. Out of the desperation to survive, Isaac redug the old well of his father Abraham which had been stopped up by the Philistines. Later on his servant dug out more wells and God continued to bless His people.
Too often Christians or churches try to find new ways to solve problems yet forget there are ancient ways which had worked well.
Martyn Lloyd-Jones reminds us:
“There is great value in the reading of Church history and a study of the past, and nothing, surely, is more important for us at the present time than to read the history of the past and to discover its message….Every time the Church is thus revived, she seems to be doing what Isaac did: she is going back to something that had happened before, rediscovering it and finding the ancient supply.”
As the Church faces the challenge of losing the next generation, the solution may not be in finding new ways of attracting young people to the Church, but rather may be in “digging the old well”, that is, by strengthening our families. Let us learn from Issac to dig the old well that was closed by the enemy to find the living water from God Himself to revive us!
Prayer: Dear God, please help us to reject new, unbiblical ways of the world and to return to the ancient truth from Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Hebrew words:
- חָפַר ḥāfair (v) = to dig 挖
- בְּאֵר beair (n) = well 水井
