See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Colossians 2:8

One of the saddest failures of the modern-day church is that we have overemphasized loving God with our hearts and emotions and have lost loving God with our minds and intellects. We limit the Christian life to activities we do at church or to that which seems “spiritual”. So our minds become wide open to “philosophy and empty deceit” without knowing that they are “according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” As a result, the minds of many Christians have been taken captive without the realization of it.

We have forgotten, or have not recognized, that education is an area which should be an act of worship. We cannot restrict Christian thinking to only studying at our church Bible studies. Whether we are studying mathematics, biology, history, literature, or any other subject, we should keep Christ in all areas of learning. Due to our limitations, when we cannot reason through some area, instead of removing God from the picture, we should submit our thinking to be consistent with God’s words.

Os Guinness wisely writes that:

“Thinking Christianly is thinking by Christians about anything and everything in a consistently Christian way -in a manner that is shaped, directed, and restrained by the truth of God’s Word and God’s Spirit.”

Let us guard our minds 24*7 by the Word of God so that we won’t be taken captive by the world’s philosophies and empty deceit; instead let us develop a mind for God in our intellectual endeavors.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help us not only to guard our minds from attacks of the world but also to develop a mind for God so that we will see God’s design and beauty throughout our learning! In Jesus name, Amen.
