When Our Children Ask

Deuteronomy 6:20 “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Throughout the Bible we see God not only giving commands to the Israelites – “fear the LORD your God, you and your son’s son” (Deut 6:2) – but also instructing them HOW to follow the commands. It is for parents, especially fathers, to teach their children (especially their sons) to fear the Lord. When children have questions about God and the Scriptures, God commands the father to answer their questions. The connection between generations is part of God’s design, and, as such, the church needs to promote, train, and demonstrate how fathers should and can teach their children. The best and most important Sunday School teachers are fathers. They are to teach not only on Sundays but everyday and during every moment: “when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deut. 6:7)

Therefore, when a child asks, we pray that there is a father who answers!

Biblically, most of the major feasts and celebrations were not corporate gatherings at the synagogue or temple, but family gatherings, presided over by the father, who functioned as the elder and priest of his family.
