Jeremiah 31:33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
God wrote the Old Covenant (the Ten Commandments) on tablets of stone for the Israelites, but when it came to the New Covenant, God said “I will write it on their hearts.” What a difference! External laws cannot change hearts; they can at best only address or alter behavior. The dilemma regarding the human problem of sin is that sin cannot be solved by external laws. The role of external laws is to lead us to the One who can solve our sin problem, a Savior who provides the needed sacrifice for our sins. God wants to go deeper than our behavior; He wants a change in our hearts. When we are a part of the New Covenant, we know God not just intellectually but more importantly personally; we develop a close relationship with Him. God desires to write His law on our hearts. The question is, are we willing for Him to do this?
