110:1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, prophesied that there would be a Messiah who would come not only to be the ruler of all nations but also to be the priest. No other passage from the Old Testament is quoted more in the New Testament than Psalm 110:1. As our world is in turmoil and daily reports and social media are filled with unfavorable news, let us turn our focus to the coming Messiah who is currently sitting at God’s right hand, waiting for the LORD to “make [his] enemies [his] footstool.” Jesus, the true King, is coming, and he will not only “execute judgment among the nations” (v. 6) but will also be the priest for the people who are redeemed by him. Therefore let us bow down before the One who sits on the throne of heaven, not before the ones on the “thrones” of the earth, and “offer [ourselves] freely”!
