Train Up (Not Try to Please) a Child
箴言 22:6 教養孩童走當行的道，就是到老他也不偏離。
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
兒童或許患上COVID-19並遭有症狀的機會較小，但是COVID-19揭示了一種甚至更危險的病毒：態度不尊重的“病毒“。正如倫納德·薩克斯（Leonard Sax）博士在《The Collapse of Parenting 教養的崩潰》一書中在標題為“不尊重的文化”章節所說的那樣：
“沒有一個孩子出生就知道規則。每個孩子都必須受到教導…但是在我們生活的文 化中，父母的權威不僅在孩子的眼中，而且在父母自己的眼中都在下降……父母把孩子的願望放在首位的人可能只會贏得孩子的鄙視，而不是他們的愛。”
如果孩子在當孩童時，就沒有“走當行的道”，那麼長大後如何不會”偏離“它。作為父母，我們不應該害怕，但應該認識到現在是承擔起我們上帝賦予的權力和責任的時候，“殷勤教導[我們的]的兒女[上帝的道]。” （申命記6：7）如果我們不殷勤教養我們的孩子，那麼世界將會做到這一點，而且它已經長期以來在那樣做了。

Children may have only a small chance of contracting COVID-19 and of suffering from its symptoms, but COVID-19 has revealed an even more dangerous virus to combat: the “viral” attitude of disrespect. Dr. Leonard Sax speaks of this in his book The Collapse of Parenting in a chapter entitled “The Culture of Disrespect”:
“No child is born knowing the rules. Every child must be taught…but we live in a culture which the authority of parents has declined not only in the eyes of children but also in the eyes of parents themselves…The parent who puts the child’s wishes first may earn only the child’s contempt. not their love”.
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” If even as a child an individual does not walk “in the way he should go”, it is hard to expect that he will not depart from it when he is old. As parents we should not be afraid but recognize that this is the time to take up our God-given authority and responsibility to “teach [God’s word] diligently to [our] children.” (Deut. 6:7) If we do not teach our children, the world will do it, as it has been doing for a long time already.
This Saturday, June 13, from 10:30 am – 12 pm EST, is a good opportunity for us to come together to consider how to train up our children “in the way [they] should go”. Whether our children are attending public school or private school or are homeschooled, we all have the same responsibility to train up our children at home.
