For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.

2 Corinthians 13:8

你無法處理真相!”You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!””

Today’s battle is the battle for the Truth – God’s Word vs. man’s ideas. As vividly showcased this past Wednesday night, the U.S. Senate voted 61 to 36 to set man’s ideas above God’s Word on the definition of marriage. Indeed “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” and his servants “disguise themselves as servants of righteousness”. Through the disguised and redefined word “love”, man has redefined God’s truth. In a statement anticipating the Senate passage of this act, President Biden said, “The United States is on the brink of reaffirming a fundamental truth: love is love. And Americans should have the right to marry the person they love.”

Love according to God’s truth brings goodness and blessing to society. When love departs from God’s truth, it leads to chaos – especially for our children who will be indoctrinated from young. Paul’s words remind us again that man will ultimately be unable to stand against God’s truth. Psalm 119:160 says, “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.” The gospel is more than simply “Jesus loves you”; it must include “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:20), and this includes the definition of marriage. Churches need to redirect their focus from one of asking people to come into the church building to that of strengthening families. As we fight for the truth of marriage, we also need to act on the truth.

In a courtroom scene in the movie A Few Good MenCol. Nathan R. Jessup shouts at Lt. Daniel Kaffee, the attorney  played by Tom Cruise, “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” The churches have the truth (God’s Word); the question for us is, “Can we handle the truth”? Will we remain silent and allow untruths to prevail or will we speak God’s truth boldly with compassion and live it out? Let us speak out, as well as live out, the truth, “for we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.”

Prayer: Our Father in Heaven, may our hearts be filled with the truth of Your Word. May Your Spirit guide us more deeply into truth so we will proclaim and live out your truth in these times. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
