30 He lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, 31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

Finally, after a rough journey, Paul arrived in Rome. Surprisingly, even as a prisoner, Paul had much freedom to live his life. Nevertheless, he did not spend time sightseeing in the city but made his house into a small church. We notice two things: first, he paid his own expenses for the ministry as a tentmaker (Acts 18:3) and  “welcomed all who came to him.” Hospitality is one of the lost arts in our Christian faith. When we focus most of our activities inside the church building, we often forget, or have no time, to welcome people into our homes. Second, Paul preached, “proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.” There has never been a more important time to preach and teach about the Kingdom of God than now, in our current culture.

In Jewish tradition, the home is called a mikdash ma’at, “little sanctuary.” Making your little sanctuary into a Jewish space is more a matter of what your family does inside it (celebrating holidays, welcoming guests, learning and teaching) than what it looks like. (How to Raise a Jewish Child by Anita Diamant and Karen Kushner)

Let our homes become a mikdash ma’at (a “little sanctuary”) to welcome guests and to teach God’s word to our children and to those who come to our home.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Please help us turn our homes into a “little sanctuary” to shine forth your goodness and beauty to those who come to our homes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
