The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.

John 7:7

Jesus did not seek to be liked. Actually, the world hates Jesus because Jesus testified about it that its works are evil. When the church seeks to be liked by the world, she loses the courage and ability to speak out against the evil of the world. The silence of the church concerning the evil of our times is the saddest tragedy today. Eric Metaxas, author of the biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his new book Letter to the American Church warn us,

“The German Church of the 1930s was silent in the face of evil; but can there be any question whether the American Church of our own time is guilty of the same silence?”

Exactly 505 years ago today, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther courageously posted 95 theses against the Church and the Pope. Chuck Colson observed that

“When we cannot name or identify evil, we lose the capacity to deal with it – and ultimately we compound its deadly effects.”

Due to the silence of the church, we now see the deadly effects of evil. Halloween is the celebration of death which is the enemy of God, yet many churches and Christians participate in the celebration of this pagan holiday. As we pray for those affected by the recent tragedy in Seoul where so many young people’s lives were horrifically lost, let us also be reminded that evil is real and that the Church needs to speak out boldly against what God has said is evil – before it is too late.

May the Church be reminded by the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless.
Not to speak is to speak.
Not to act is to act.”

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we ask You to give Your Church the courage to speak out against what is evil in our world today, so that people will repent from evil, turn their hearts to You, and find life’s true purpose from knowing You, their loving Creator! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
