Genesis 6:5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
When God saw “that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually[,]… it grieved him to his heart.” Sin does not just cause harm to ourselves but moreover grieves God’s heart and causes us to “fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The word “sin” and even the concept itself has disappeared from common use because sin is against God. When God is left out of our lives, the idea of sin is left out as well. We even celebrate what God says is evil. Chuck Colson stated it well: “When we cannot name or identify evil, we lose the capacity to deal with it – and ultimately we compound its deadly effects.” Yet out of God’s grief comes God’s salvation for us through Jesus, just as the ark saved the lives of Noah and his family. Sin grieves God, but faith pleases God and causes Him to smile (Hebrews 11:6).
