Rend the Heavens and Come Down

Isaiah 64:1 Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence— as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil—to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence! When you did awesome things that we did not look for, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him.

In deep desperation, Isaiah cried out to God to “rend the heavens and come down that the mountains might quake at your presence.” The word “rend” is also used in the Bible in the context of a person tearing his clothing at the news or occurrence of sudden calamity. With the whole world rising up against God and attacking His people, we don’t need to be afraid; rather we should wait for God and His timing. It seems that the world is gaining total control and succeeding in opposing God – in Supreme Court rulings, in the media, in education, in the business world, and so on. Every area of our society is mocking Christians who are still holding fast to the Word of God. But when God “rend[s] the heavens and come[s] down”, the nations will tremble at [God]’s presence. Therefore, let us be patient, for God “will act for those who wait for him”!
