Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. ⁸ Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching,⁹ for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.

箴言 1:⁷ 敬畏耶和華是知識的開端；愚妄人藐視智慧和訓誨。⁸ 我兒啊，要聽你父親的訓誨，不可離棄你母親的教誨；⁹ 因為這要作你頭上恩惠的華冠，作你頸上的項鏈。

The Bible warns us that one of the signs of the last days is disobedience to parents. (2 Timothy 3:2). We are truly seeing this “pandemic” of disobedience to parents in our times especially as we “shelter at home” during COVID-19. Unfortunately, even the church is influenced by the world and regards it as “normal” for youth to be disobedient to their parents because it is so common. Proverbs is written especially “to the youth” (1:4) and it emphasizes to “hear … your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.” The world tells parents to be their children’s friends and to allow them to do whatever they like: ” ‘Let kids decide’ has become a mantra of good parenting.” (The Collapse of Parenting, Leonard Sax, MD, Phd, 2016) But God’s Word commands parents to discipline their children, to “bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord“ (Ephesians 6:4) not simply according to parents’ own will. It is time for both parents and children to have “the fear of the Lord” because it is “the beginning of knowledge.” (1:7)
