Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

All sin starts from the heart. Therefore the condition of our hearts will direct our actions. Jeremiah 17:9 gives us a diagnosis of our problem: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Eve saw the tree with the fruit that God had forbidden Adam and her to eat; although she knew God’s command, in her heart “the tree was to be desired to make one wise.” It was the desire in her heart that compelled her to take the fruit and eat it. A sinful heart cannot be cured unless there is a spiritual “heart transplant” through the salvation of Jesus Christ along with the working of the Holy Spirit. God is ready to do a “heart transplant” for us, but He will only do it if we have “a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart.” (51:17). For Christians who have had a “heart transplant”, let us “teach transgressors [God’s] ways” (51:13), that is, direct sinners to return to God. Let us start out each new day with a new clean heart accompanied by new action!
