Job 31:1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes;  how then could I gaze at a virgin?… 4 Does not he see my ways and number all my steps?

In Job’s final appeal to God regarding his innocence, Job points out that he has even  “made a covenant with [his] eyes [not to] gaze at a virgin”. The eye is a key sense organ through which we encounter the outside world, but it is also the organ which most makes us vulnerable to falling. Eve “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes” (Gen. 3:6) She then took action to eat the fruit  that God had forbidden. David first “saw” Bathsheba bathing, took action based on his desire, then committed a series of crimes to cover his wrongdoing. If Eve and David fell in response to what their eyes saw, then we live in a time during which there is even a more desperate need to “make a covenant with our eyes”. The subtitle of Philip Zimbardo’s book The Demise of Guys vividly points out the “eye problem” of our times: “Are video games and pornography ruining America’s young men?”

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” (Matt. 6:22) Let us beware of allowing our eyes to “eat a buffet” because “the eye is not satisfied with seeing.” (Eccs 1:8) Let us “make a covenant with our eyes” and feed our eyes with “healthy food” that brings light to our whole being!
